Matthew Asbell is an attorney, primarily focused on protecting creativity, whether for scientific inventions, brands of products or services, or works of entertainment in the form of music, books, film and video productions, etc.

He is currently an associate of the international intellectual property law firm of Ladas & Parry, LLP, where he helps clients obtain patents, trademarks, and copyrights worldwide.

Background and Experience

His passion for the areas of intellectual property law and entertainment law arises from the very diverse industries in which he worked prior to becoming a lawyer. Mr. Asbell previously worked in the medical, pharmaceutical, and biotech fields, in the information technology (IT) field, in the clothing business, in publishing, and in the music industry. As a result, he speaks the language and understands the needs of doctors and scientists, the owners and managers of businesses, and writers, songwriters, filmmakers, entertainers and artists. Mr. Asbell uses these skills along with his knowledge and skills in the areas of intellectual property and entertainment law to assist clients in obtaining, licensing, and enforcing patents, trademarks, and copyrights.

Global Perspective

Mr. Asbell additionally prides himself on his cultural sensitivity and language skills. He has lived in numerous countries and travelled extensively throughout the world. In addition to his native American English, he is proficient in Brazilian Portuguese and Spanish, both of which he has used in his intellectual property law practice. He is also married to a Brazilian, who works for the United Nations. Mr. Asbell has worked extensively with clients and attorneys outside the United States, such as in China, India, Korea, Brazil, Europe, Russia, and Hungary. He has additionally handled U.S. immigration matters.

Activity in the Legal Community

Mr. Asbell is active within the legal community. He is a chair of the Young Lawyers Committee and a member of the International Intellectual Property Committee of the New York State Bar Association Intellectual Property Section. He is also a member of several other local, national, and international bar associations focussed on intellectual property law.
